Committee Purpose
The Climate Change Committee has been formed to help bring our collective voice to bear on the issues of climate change. Our goal is to encourage units of local government to tangibly address climate change. We are dedicated to providing them with information to assist with the development of actionable strategies.
We also want to encourage citizens – like you -- to become better informed and active in demanding that the leaders of units of local government address climate change with specific, meaningful, and measurable action. We are reaching out to units of local government to find the answers to questions like these: (1) Who within the unit of government is specifically charged with addressing sustainability and climate change? (2) What funds are being devoting to addressing climate change? (3) What is being done to eliminate fossil fuel dependence? and (4) Is there a specific plan in place to address climate change and sustainability, and, if so, what is that plan? |
Get in on the Action!
Support the National Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategy Act
The national League of Women Voters is asking its local members to contact their legislators in Congress, and urge them to support the National Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategy Act. This bill would require the federal government to create a national strategy to prepare for climate hazards, and thereby strengthen national security, and ensure that small businesses, disadvantaged communities, other localities, states, and regions have the necessary tools and coordinated funding, guidance, and support to prepare before disasters strike. Help make this proposed legislation a reality, and make a phone call or send an email to your representative in Washington today. More information is available at lwv.org.
Peoria Urban Forestry Advisory Board
Did you know we have a “Peoria Urban Forestry Advisory Board” (PUFAB)?!
It is a part of City of Peoria government, and is charged with giving guidance, advice and counsel to the city regarding how the city manages its trees. Visit the City of Peoria website to see meeting minutes and agendas-- or plan to attend the next meeting!
Attend Local Educational Events
We are partnering with existing local champions of sustainability and the fight against climate change here in Peoria and in Illinois. Where possible, we will promote upcoming events on our Facebook page and on our events calendar. We hope to see you there!
